After our stint at the Inter IIT Sports Meet 2017, we were encouraged to participate in the sports fests at other IITs this spring, though our sports secretary, Himanshu, was not too convinced. He considered organising our own fest rather than sending a few teams to other IITs. This brainchild of his, led to the inception of Convoquer, which gave us a chance to identify the best amongst the students at IIT Jammu, while enjoying the comforts of being at home. The consistent support of the Director, Dr. Manoj Singh Gaur and Dr Anup Shukla during our Inter-IIT sports preparation, led us to believe that we are competent enough to organise a week-long engaging meet and that too in the institute's second year. We are also grateful to the officials at BSF Paloura and JKCA for granting us access to their grounds.
Convoquer promises to pave a way for the upcoming batches of IIT Jammu in the field of sports and recreation. Presently, there are 120 participants competing in 10 events, in a period spanning 7 days, and these stats will gradually improve as the years pass by. We are also proposing to invite local colleges in the near future, so as to develop a sense of camaraderie and healthy competition. It will endow us with a foundation for our National Level Sports Fest as well.
Given the attitudes of some of the underclassmen, don’t be surprised to see them back at it again during the Inter-IIT Sports Meet 2018.
